Microsoft founder Bill Gates and his wife and fellow philanthropist Melinda are headed for divorce after a 27-year marriage, the couple announced on Monday.
One of the world’s richest couples with a joint fortune estimated at $130 billion, the couple have directed billions into charitable work around the globe via their hugely influential foundation.
The two put out a joint statement on their Twitter accounts, they mentioned that they can no longer grow as a couple, they said that they will continue to work together at the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.
The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has become one of the richest and influential forces in global public health, spending more than $54 billion over the past two decades including malaria and infectious disease control, agricultural research, basic health care and sanitation and also to reduce poverty.
The Gates Foundation last year committed some of $1.75 billion to COVID-19 relief.
Bill Gates, was a geeky teenager when he started what would become the world’s most valuable company, and was for a time the world’s richest man and a most prominent philanthropist.
Bill Gates, 65, who co-founded Microsoft Corp, and his spouse, Melinda French Gates, 56, met after she joined the software giant as a product manager, and they dated for a few years before they got married in January 1994 in Hawaii.
He stepped down as Microsoft chief executive in 2008 to give more time to philanthropy and later left the board, keeping only the title of founder and technology advisor.
Recently, Bill Gates has basically removed himself from Microsoft and the tech industry, rather than speaking about poverty and health initiatives, and the coronavirus pandemic.
The split comes just two years after the divorce of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and his wife MaxKenzie.
Bill Gates and Melinda Gates hired Law firms to assist in the divorce process. Melinda is represented by a team of four New York based counsel from two separate firms.
Following Bill and Melinda Gates’ divorce papers opened that the couple never had a prenup, many are concern how the couple, with a joint net worth of $130 billion, will divide their assets.
He and Melinda have three children and founded the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation in 2000.
Gates, the world’s fourth-richest man, has spoken about how each of his three children will only inherit about $10 million of his fortune.
